Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) November 4, 2010
A new variant of the Boonana malware, first documented and named by SecureMac, has been discovered by ESET. The new variant, trojan.osx.boonana.b, behaves in a very similar manner to the original malware, and is currently being distributed on multiple sites. In addition to the website documented by ESET as currently distributing the malware, SecureMac has identified two more websites that are currently hosting the new malware variant. Rather than the initial site which tricks users into running (and installing) the malware, these servers seem to be hosting update code for the malware. The infected machines contact these servers looking for updates to the malware payload. At the time of analysis (November 2nd, 2010), these servers were live, and distributing malware.
In addition to the malware updates, these servers contain what appear to be keystroke logs from infected machines, including usernames and passwords.
With a quick glance, Boonana may look like a variant of Koobface, which was discovered for Windows back in 2008. However, ESET has also confirmed SecureMac's initial analysis of Boonana as a new unique piece of malware, which does not share a common code-base with the previously discovered Koobface worm. ESET's threat analysis of Boonana can be found at:
Additionally, Microsoft identifies the malware as Trojan:Java/Boonana, and rates it as a severe threat for both Mac and Windows:
Microsoft's analysis of the OS X version of Boonana, also with a severe threat level, can be found at:
Another security vendor has verified that the Boonana malware is capable of infecting Linux machines, and will proceed to join a botnet once installed. The malware also affects Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows.
SecureMac's free Boonana Trojan Removal Tool can detect and remove the threat for Apple's Mac OS X; manual removal instructions are included in the SecureMac writeups. This free Boonana Trojan Horse Removal Tool ( ) runs on Mac OS X 10.5 and higher - Download from Users may also run MacScan Security and Privacy software ( ) for Mac OS X to detect the Boonana Trojan Horse. MacScan runs on Mac OS X 10.2.4 or higher and includes a free 30-day trial. Existing users are encouraged to download the latest malware definitions before scanning.

FDA gives thumbs down to Jazz drug; market feels no pain
BANGALORE (Reuters) – Jazz Pharmaceuticals Inc said the U.S. health regulator did not approve its experimental drug to treat fibromyalgia, but shares rose 5 percent on expectations that physicians could still prescribe the drug, already approved as a treatment for narcolepsy.
The drug JZP-6 contains the same active ingredient as Jazz's Xyrem, which already derives revenue from off-label prescriptions for treating fibromyalgia, a poorly understood disorder that causes pain and fatigue.
"We have a situation here that says the company cannot go out there and spend money on marketing the drug for this indication," WBB Securities analyst Steve Brozak said.
But this simply means that there is less expenditure than the company would normally have to pay for marketing the drug for this indication, Brozak said.
While doctors are generally free to use approved medications for non-approved uses -- so called "off-label use -- the FDA's stamp of approval would have allowed Jazz to legally promote the new pain indication.
The market for the fibromyalgia indication is expected to grow because of its visibility, Brozak, who has a "strong buy" rating on the stock, said.
Xyrem, is expected to generate sales of $222.7 million by 2014, according to Thomson Reuters data.
Capstone Investments analyst Difei Yang said the stock has been undervalued for a while, and believes the company remains an attractive acquisition target given Xyrem's outlook.
The FDA's decision does not come as a surprise as it follows a U.S. advisory panel rejection in August, amid concerns the product could be misused as a "date-rape" drug.
The company's shares, trading at $10.52, have now recovered all their losses since the panel rejection on Aug 20, and are trading above levels just prior to that decision.
ADDITIONAL TRIALS
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) complete response letter said the drug, JZP-6, could not be approved in its present form and "discusses a number of topics, including the need for additional clinical studies," Jazz Pharma said in its statement Monday.
The company said the letter also discussed the need to evaluate the drug's safety in patients who may be taking other medications, and define an appropriate patient population for the product.
"We are both surprised and disappointed with the complete response letter," Chief Executive Bruce Cozadd said on a conference call with analysts.
"We had believed the primary concerns and focus of the new drug application review was on items related to the proposed new trade name concentration, and risk evaluation and mitigation strategy."
Despite the panel rejection in August, some panelists had then urged the company not to give up on the medicine, citing a need for new options for the disorder.
"Based on the committee members' inputs at the time of the panel meeting, I think there will be an additional clinical trial, we don't know the scope of the clinical trial but another trial means the drug will be delayed by at least two years," analyst Yang, who kept her "hold" rating, said.
The company said it did not have details of the additional trial and said it has requested a meeting with the FDA to discuss and clarify the contents of its letter.
